Applications are invited for the IP Core & Transmission Engineering Team Leader position based in Stellenbosch.
This person will report to the Network Manager.
PURPOSE OF THE ROLE: The IP Core & Transmission Engineer Team Leader will play a critical role in the design, implementation, and optimisation of our Core network infrastructure. You will be responsible for maintaining and enhancing our IP core and transmission network to ensure we meet the uptime requirements of the network.
Key Performance Areas would include, but are not limited to:
- Responsible to lead the National Core and Transmission team.
- Responsible for the national IP Core network.
- Run the IP Core network with 99.99% uptime. - Responsible for the national transmission network
- Run Transmission network with 99.99% availability.
Key Outputs:
- Leadership:
Lead and oversee the team and all activities, ensuring effective performance management and clear communication of expectations. Uphold and reinforce company policies, support, motivate, and provide feedback to foster team growth. Efficiently onboard new recruits, promote organizational values and coordinate schedules within the department.
- Cross Functional alignment:
Ensure the Core and transmission teams is fully aligned with the rest of the functional teams and other business units to reach the strategic and tactical goals of the business.
- Network Architecture and Design:
Developing network architecture and design plans for the IP core and transmission network to ensure scalability, redundancy, and high availability.
- Network Implementation:
Deploying and configuring network equipment such as routers, switches, firewalls, and transmission equipment.
- Routing and Switching Configuration:
Configuring routing and switching protocols (e.g., BGP, OSPF, MPLS) to ensure efficient data routing and traffic management within the IP core network.
- Quality of Service (QoS): Implementation:
Setting up QoS policies to prioritize and optimize traffic flows, ensuring that critical traffic receive the necessary network resources.
- Security Measures:
Implementing security measures, including access control lists (ACLs), firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention systems (IDPS), and VPNs to protect the network from unauthorized access and cyber threats.
- Monitoring and Troubleshooting:
Setting up network monitoring tools and processes to proactively detect and resolve network issues. This includes monitoring network performance, bandwidth utilization, and fault detection.
- Capacity Planning:
Analysing network traffic patterns and growth trends to plan for network capacity upgrades and expansions as necessary.
- Disaster Recovery and Redundancy:
Designing and implementing disaster recovery plans and redundancy mechanisms to ensure network uptime and data continuity in case of failures or disasters.
- Documentation:
Maintaining comprehensive documentation of network configurations, procedures, and changes made to the network.
- Network Optimization:
Continuously optimizing network performance by fine-tuning configurations, upgrading hardware/software, and implementing efficiency improvements.
- Compliance and Regulatory Requirements:
Ensuring that the network infrastructure complies with relevant industry standards and regulatory requirements, such as data protection regulations and telecommunications laws.
- Team Collaboration:
Collaborating with cross-functional teams to meet cross functional goals.
- Training and Knowledge Sharing:
Staying updated with the latest networking technologies and sharing knowledge with colleagues to enhance the skillset of the team.
- Incident Response:
Developing and implementing incident response plans to address network security breaches or major network outages promptly.
Work Experience and Competencies Required:
- Experience in leading and guiding a group of technical specialists.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a network engineering role in the IPS or FNO industry
- 3 years’ experience in facilitating complex technical workshops to find solutions.
- Proven track record of translating intricate technical concepts into easily understandable language for non-technical stakeholders.
- Demonstrated proficiency in both effective communication and comprehension, complemented by a strong background in technical documentation writing.
- Expert proficiency in working on JUNIPER, CISCO, or ARISTA equipment.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot issues efficiently.
- Excellent communication skills to work in a cross functional environment.
Qualifications:
- Grade 12
- A relevant Bachelor’s Degree will be advantageous.
- Networking Certifications will be essential such as JNCIP, CCNP, ITIL
